Endlessly Fascinated
I was recently talking with my best friend Brian over email and he stated the words "endlessly fascinated". For some reason those simple words stuck in my head all day since I read his email last night. He was describing something else completely but it is such an all encompassing phrase which describes how I view most things in the world. Endlessly Fascinated by...
It got me started on a whole tangential train of thought. What am I endlessly fascinated by?
1. First of all, the first thing that comes to mind and the subject of the above email is, for lack of a better term, the suburban life. The wife, 2.5 kids, dog and white picket fence. I have always been fascinated with this since I was younger. I would like to one day have one of my own but on my own terms. No mediocre two hour discussions about weedeaters when the neighbors come over, No wearing aprons with Kiss the chef during cook outs, No ... well ... you get the idea.
2. Butterfly Effect like connections - I will discuss this in detail later in another blog. Things like how Groucho Marx is indirectly responsible for the top grossing horror film of all time and how the Catholic Church's greed led to the Black Plaque.
3. Behavioral Psychology
4. Child Development - It is amazing to watch, especially the first few years, From Tabula Rasa to Pokemon
5. Social Psychology
6. Medical Procedures - It is almost a fetish without the sexual component. I could watch everything from Autopsies to Cosmetic surgeries for hours on end and do not get grossed out nor tired of it.
7. Those eight year old little fuckers on youtube.com who get 1,000,000 points on any Guitar Hero song on Expert difficulty. I can't even finish Reigning Blood on easy.
8. Occult lore and folklore- Specifically the "hidden" knowledge. Occult is literally translated as Hidden. Not the black magic stuff most people think of when they hear that word. Occult knowledge has led to many modern day practices such as medicine (look up the meaning of the snakes on the stick symbol which Doctors use. It comes from Alchemy which also led to Chemistry and many other scientific disciplines).
9. Martial Arts of any type or form.
10. Word origins - For example, the derogatory term "Faggot" is named after the pile of stick they used to burn homosexuals at the stake on during the middle ages.
11. Nascar fans - Really all the cars do is turn left for FOUR MOTHERFUCKIN' HOURS. Seriously, WTF??? How do you watch that shit. Even drunk.
12. Military Strategy - Everything from the Battle of Thermopylae (SP?) to modern warfare
13. 2Pac - Seriously, how many posthumous albums can you put out. Just stay dead.
14. The art of the Mentalist or people reading
15. Comics - What can I say, I am still a dork at heart.
16. Musical Genre mixing - Rap and Country (Zachariah and the Lobos Riders), Country and Metal (Rebel Meats Rebel), Metal and Electronica (Spawn soundtrack), Electronica and Rap (Blade 2 and 3 soundtrack). No matter if it is bad or good, serious or tongue in Cheek, I will listen to it.
17. Sex - Let's face it, I'm a guy and that is all we think about whether we are getting it or not.
18. Wikipedia - Best thing to happen to the series of tubes call the internet since computers.
