So here's the plan: as soon as I've got the money to cover the next two months (an estimated $1000), I am leaving my job and spending November and December in MS, helping out.
If you aren't aware, the problems aren't over. It is going to take at least a year, maybe two, before people's homes are cleaned out or torn down, before downed trees are removed.
Look at the pictures at flickr.com/photos/Mayfairs or flickr.com/photos/handsonusa/ -- these are pictures from just two towns. Every town looks like this, for hundreds of miles, and there is no end to the work.
AND guess what: the majority of the work is being done by volunteers. And interest is waning. It's actually an easy enough life as a volunteer, too. plenty of free food, in some areas free beer -- you can't really work after sundown, as there's no light, so there is a lot of free time, interesting people, public access to internet and phones...
I'm going, because I just cannot justify not going.
My friend Anthony has been down there several times, trips totallying over a month of work, and now that he's home, he's organizing trips for people, of any length of time. 3 days, one week, two, three weeks, whatever. If you can spare travel time and even one day of work, you will be surprised what you can accomplish. Please email him at gm123@regalcinemas.com or email me at crdonner@tmo.blackberry.net, even if you'd like to go but aren't sure that you can. We can help make it happen.
