Alright, so I'm crazy...
So my buddy Dave has been sending me metal CD's and I've hated everything he sent me, except Porcupine Tree and Blackfield which are Steve Wilson projects. So I started looking for heavy stuff that I do like. So far, my favorites out of what I've found are Zao, a Christian metalcore band, the Swedish Tech-metal band Meshuggah, and one that Dave actually recommended when I told him about what I was listening to, a Devin Townsend side-project called Strapping Young Lad.
Strapping Young Lad is incredibly heavy! I mean, even on my wussy speakers, my ears are hurting from the assault. This guy is an amazing producer! How he manages to get so much sound without a muddy mix is really amazing. It's not detailed counterpoint like Further Down the Spiral, but instead a huge wall of sound. Devin Townsend is a great singer too. He actually sang on a Steve Vai album early in his career.
The bands that I've listened to: Nevermore (screamo, crap, sent by Dave), Pain of Salvation (good music, singer sounds like he's from Slaughter, crap, sent by Dave) Necrophagist (death metal with titles like Fermented Offal Discharge, good music, very progressive, horrible singer), Atheist (great music, very progressive, singer is a little "hair" for me), Planet X (the only song I've got is instrumental, jazz-metal, good stuff, I'm worried about what I'll think of the singer) Martyr (speed metal, good stuff, singer is a little "hair" for me) Anthrax (rules), Zao (metalcore, great singer, he can really scream his ass off) Strapping Young Lad (incredible, like I said) And I think that's it.
Hmmm... so I wish I had something deep to say but I don't. I'm out.
Tim.
