In memory of Malcolm X
Thirty-nine years ago today Malcolm X was murdered. He was thirty-nine years old.
During my youth I was taught (at home and in the classroom) that Malcom X was a bad person- that he preached hate and violence.
When I was beginning my college career I read his autobiography. I quickly realized that Malcolm X was not a bad man. Instead he was someone that spoke of and from an ugly reality of mass oppression.
To this day his autobiography is the most important thing I have ever read. If you have not read it I strongly recommend that you do. It will teach you a lot about what it means to be oppressed and it will teach you a lot about how the oppressed conceptualize their lives.
