How many times can one have one's heart hurt before there's nothing left to hurt?

they say... your heart is a muscle and it can heal itself. so, are we to assume we can be hurt over and over again? i for one think people get once chance to hurt me... and sometimes, only very few sometimes a possible second chance. what's that saying... do it to me once, shame on you -do it to me twice, shame on me.
