The weekend was wonderful, despite a lapse in Internet access that has delayed me in delivering tdings of it to all of you beautiful souls.
But at last, here I am to regale you with tales of the past few days...
The weather has been magnificent--unusually autumnal for Texas at this time of year, thanks to a welcome cold front that has paid us an extended visit.
I spent a good bit of time knocking about town with camera, enjoying the weather and the excellent natural lighting conditions.
Friday night my friend L and I had one of our customary "paint the town" nights. We decided to kick the evening off in atypical fashion, however, by joining some of our friends in a few rounds of bowling.
Bowling actually proved to be great fun. We delighted ourselves by commandeering the computer terminals and replacing the names of our friends with amusing nicknames, flagging various persons repeatedly as "bumper bowlers", making fun of the "serious" bowlers, and generally making harmless mischief when not bowling our own mediocre-but-surprisingly-decent games.
Afterwards, we repaired to the bar of a nearby Mexican eatery famed for its Mexican Martinis, which are essentially large cocktail shakers full to the brim with top-notch margaritas enhanced by a splash of olive juice, and served with little martini glasses and skewered olives.
After imbibing a half-shaker of martini apiece, we naturally let the conversation slip rather candidly into our personal lives. Interspersed moments of elation and dejection ensued, but the end result was one of the better friend-to-friend talks we have had in quite a while.
This reminded me, once again, that I am blessed with some truly amazing friends.
Saturday night I attended an all-night movie festival / slumber party. The occasion was the two-year anniversary of Mister Sinus Theater 3000, an Austin institution that employs 3 local comics to make fun of bad movies at the local drafthouse cinema. Those of you who were fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Comedy Central will be well-acquainted with the spirited tradition which this live-action version does its best to perpetuate.
Saturday's festivities included 8 non-stop hours of slumber-party merriment, from midnight to 8pm. I am proud to say that I can still stay up all night with the best of them--despite consuming only an entire bottle of red wine and one squatty little Thai Red Bull drink, I slept not a single wink. In between the movie spoofs, the Sinus boys conducted a pajama contest, showed slide shows of bizarre cereal boxes, shamelessly exhibited home movies of their sordid pasts (as white boy rapper, home-shopping host, and Survivor auditioner, to name a few), and generally packed the whole night with bizarre entertainment. At sunrise, they served up a buffet of all the sugary cereals "your mom would never buy for you". My only regret is that we never completed the prank promised in the program--we were supposed to have toilet-papered the nearby Polly Esther's dance club. Still, it was great fun, and a worthy excuse to stay up all night.
Sunday, naturally, was devoted mostly to sleep, but I did have a nice walk around the neighborhood Sunday evening, enjoying a bit more of this marvellous weather.
This weekend, at least, there really was no better place in the world to be than Austin.

we had some excellent bowling trips in high school. we'd drive around for hours trying to figure out what to do and usually ended up at the bowling alley.
Hmm, I'm talking about that like it wasn't 5 years ago.
good thing it's so close..
