I saw Sideways last night. It was disappointing - heavy handed sentimentalism, overly long, in need of a script doctor, yet not entirely unaffecting. The overall melancholy tone was well pitched and the acting pretty strong.
There's a scene where two characters talk about why they like wine - jesus, I was groaning out loud, it was so unsubtle, I almost expected flashcards across the bottom of the screen POIGNANT MOMENT! SUBTEXT! METAPHOR!
It was so hot in the theatre, everyone in the audience sweated as one creature, De Niro smoking a stogie and laughing his ass off down in front would not have been out of place.
----
There are upsides to being single again, though i admit they are all superficial. I can write without distraction, I can sleep diagonally across the bed, I can eat whatever or not eat at all.... the dog and the cat however, they're exhibiting signs of emotional discord, which makes me sad - who can stand to live with an unhappy dog?

Go see polly's set. Beautiful, almost documentarian, Shermanesque - she deserves a pirate.
