Alright, I am trying to get more and more involved in this site and blogging seems to be the way to make yourself known to others. I have posted two little blogs before but those were rants. Figured I would start this one with a personal experience that is kinda comical from my time at war in Iraq.
So here it goes:
Back in October of 2008 I was a fairly new Airmen to the USAF. I was tasked to deploy to Balad Iraq for 6 months. Well on our way out I started to sing out "I'm leaving on a jet plane".... my wife did not find that amusing. Anyways fast forward a couple months, I am used to the base and the limited entertainment it had. We did not have great bathrooms out there, mostly just a trailer with some showers and toilets in it. The one near my Pod or living space ( smaller then a Dorm room for 2 people) was pretty busy all the time and when your deployed you rarely get any privacy. In my earlier days working and patrolling I noticed a few showers that were away from populated areas so I figured I would check it out and have a nice long hot shower or whatever kinda hot I could get in privacy. Now to understand this next part I need to kinda side step to an explanation. We have the locals come onto our base to do work for money to help out their economy. Some people are from different countries and live on base in their own section with their own people, they are not allowed to use Cell phones as they can be used to send intelligence to the terrorist or even remotely set off a bomb, so as you can see its a no no. So I come out of the trailer with my sandles on and notice there is a TCN (one of the Iraqi workers) standing in front of me using a cell phone. Once he sees me he runs off into the night (oh BTW it was night time). I was left to stand there thoughts racing, the most disturbing thought that went through my mind was "Iraqi off in the middle of no where with a cell phone, great there's a bomb under my feet and this trailers about to go up." and what surprised me was what I thought next "Well good game Zach, we had fun". It might not sound like a funny thought to you but have you ever been in a situation you seriously thought you were about to be blown up? You would be surprised at what the mind does in stressful situations such as this. Anyways back to the story, so I waited for a minute and nothing happened. Well I finally came to the conclusion that my life was spared and shrugged my shoulders and walked the mile and some distance on foot back to my Pod. Never to see that man again nor did anything blow up.
I am not sure if any of you will find that story interesting or humerus but given the situation I thought it was pretty damn funny. If you all like the story I can share many more, some about Iraq and some about my new job teaching people how to shoot weapons, some crazy stories be happenin with that job lol.
