I got my first jury summons a couple of weeks ago. I went in yesterday to see if Id be picked for the jury. I really didnt know what to expect. I wanted to get off it because it was a case at my cities superior court and those tend to drag on longer. I didnt know what to say to the judge that would have him dismiss me. I could have done what Homer did in the Simpsons Just say that Im racist against all races. I didnt though.the guy was white and well Im white so I dont think that would work. To make a long story short I ended up just agreeing with both the prosecutor and the defense attorney and they ended up letting me go. Both I guess were looking for someone who would benefit them. Well I agreed with both and so I guess they were uncomfortable with the fact that I could swing in favor of either one. They both wanted someone who would benefit their case.
One thing that I though was really interesting was watching people try and get out of it. A woman around her mid 40s told the judge that she was just too nervous and couldnt make a fair judgment based on the facts that would be presented to her. She ended up being excused. Another guy claimed that he may know one of the witnesses but he doesnt know. He didnt know what the guy looked like or anything yet he still claimed that he might have known him. He got excused.
I guess getting off jury duty really isnt that tuff. Just act stupid and claim that you cant make a rational judgment based on all the facts given to you. Or just make sure that you dont let the prosecutor or the defense attorney know that you would go either of their ways. Make both of them think that you could make a ruling for the other. Also if you dont register to vote or you dont drive you will have a better chance of not being called in.
Aaaah fun fun fun.
