Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?
So Mayor Ray Nagin and his Seven Special Councils have finally presented their proposals for NewNew Orleans. (NuOrleans?) As most of you should know, it means an immeasurable ammount to me (and even more to many I love) that the city be restored. The proposals vary in realism and appropriateness - but that's not what I'm concerned with. I'd hate to see a Disney-Vegas version emerge, but right now it's uncertain that the city will get enough money to exist. It will cost billions (with a 'b') to repair the damage and construct decent levees.
As media coverage of the disaster wanes to practically silence, the pressure is on individuals to continue to vocalize their dedication to the city. Very soon, House and Senate will be developing and voting on funding bills for the reconstruction effort. The initial federal money was already far less than promised. Please, if you care for the city, its people, or hell - if you care for me...please take the five minutes to write to your representatives. The sites very quickly connect you to your rep, and each have a submission field for concerns. Please let them know its important to you. If you're uncomfortable writing, copy and paste my letter. (Don't forget to fill in the blanks.) It might be a little cheesy, but it's how I feel.
Thank you.

Senator/Representative___________,
I wanted to stress the importance of rebuilding New Orleans. This issue is at the forefront of my concerns. I feel the NYTimes article best expressed it by pointing out that all of our money that goes towards defense is to prevent the destruction of American cities and the lives therin.
That is the situation we are faced with. The city in question is one of America's richest cities, culturally and historically. It is also very important to me personally. I hope and trust that you will dedicate yourself to providing the funds needed to restore the city (which is still 50% without power) and develop not just levees, but their future.
Thank you for your consideration of my concerns.
Sincerely,
