Well...this weekend profile is a cross-post of my NIN review. I caught them at Freeborn Hall at UC Davis this past friday...here is my take...---
Ok....
First and foremost I want to thank Kayla and her bf Nathan...without thier gift this would not have been possible... I will get in touch with you to get the two tickets for the Warfield that I promised at face value...
Well...lets just day DAMN!!!!
First we start with that Carre Calloway was a talentless hack. She played guitar like an amature trying to sound hip. Her singing was frequently off key and not solid. Her lyrics were good, but had holes...like bad poetry. The only thing i can say is she dressed like a tart. Through the whole show her guitar strap was shoving the strap to her top down so her braw was showing nicely. She had a decent endowment so it was pleasant if you could block out the songs. I will add I did NOT heckle her like many did... it takes balls to come into a show of that calibur and try to open when you're unknown and she did what I assume is her best.
UC Davis was only general admission. I was within 10 feet of the stage 95% of the time...mostly just right of center between Trent and Aaron.
First...they modified the set list from Fresno:
Setlist
1 - Intro
2 - The Frail
3 - The Wretched
4 - You Know What You Are?
5 - March of the Pigs
6 - The Line Begins to Blur
7 - Piggy
8 - Terrible Lie
9 - The Collector
10 - Closer/The Only Time
11 - Home
12 - The Big Comedown
13 - The Day the World Went Away
14 - Getting Smaller
15 - With Teeth
16 - Wish
17 - Hurt
18 - The Hand That Feeds
19 - Starfuckers
20 - Head Like a Hole
It went well. I liked that they brought The Frail out as it got us moving. And the pit WAS MOVING. There were times we were jumping around so hard the fucking floor was flexing. There was minimal violence, though there were reports some asshole got stomped on the far left of the stage for booing and hecking during TDTWWA and I am sure he earned it. Only one asshole took a run onstage during Hurt which was annoying but he was off REAL quick and hauled ass to the back I only hope they kicked him out. I was a man possessed during the whole show. I was throwing surfers up left and right, some for fun others just to get them to the front to escape the pit. I was a sponge of sweat with the rest of the pigs down there, but damn it felt nice. I was estatic when they played Wish as it is still my all time fav.... I think i scared half the people around me... I was shocked I was the only one that recognized THTF intro...i cheer...silence from the crowd for another 5 seconds then they cheer when he gets into the actual song. Maybe because like Niobe i listened to it on a loop too goddamn much.
Well...an interlude. Note: This does not make me homosexual, just metrosexual. NIOBE REPORT: Trent was wearing a black t-shirt with a pocket on his left breast. IT seemed to have gray tape or some silvery design on the right sleeve that constricted it to keep it out of the way while he played guitar. He wore black jeans with little tears (most likely fabricated) all about. I never saw his shoes. He had a belt I recall with a silver buckle, but only pulled his shirt up once far enough to see....a quick ab shot. Tight but not ripped. Now.... you will be pleased to know he was closely shaven. His arms were prominantly displayed. He even pulled his sleeves up all the way to the sholders numerous times to display them. I would say in the 20-21" range if you measure. He has been working out. I will now return to hetero-review....
The fact this was general admission I think made it way better than the Fresno show. Seated is not the way to view NIN...you need to be in the mix....I was close enough to spit on stage (but never would) and it was fabulous. Trent and Aaron were amped. Jeordie was a corpse. Sit to the right of stage....i command it...Aaron is worth the seat....he was wild and just got insane by shows end. He was jumping like a frog and tearing into his guitar like it owed him money. He leaped from his 5 foot stack behind him That was too easy....he scaled the 12 footer during HLAH and jumped from there (guitar in hand). He played with his mic stand, the amps, and anything else not bolted down. He also snatched a hat from security to wear for a few mintues.
Either way....I was throughly satisfied and would rate this show a 10 on my scale. The set was balanced perfectly to let us breat enough to not pass out. They played with an abandon that any fan can apprecaite. The songs were incredible with just as many people liking THTF and WT as the ones going insane over MOTP and TBC. I cannot wait....i have 33 days until the San Fran show.....
