The word of the day was attribution.
I liked retribution better. So when I went to her house it was with this in mind. I could only be shit on so many times. I walked up the cement steps to her front door a tirade of bile hidden just behind my lips. I pressed on the doorbell and it made its far to pleasant chime, The door opened, not to her treasonous face but to her mothers. I smiled I swallowed my bile.
"Hello is Sarah there?"
"No Tommy but why don't you come in sit down. Its been a while since I've seen you."
"Well I really just wanted to talk to her quickly"
"Oh nonsense you have time to visit with me don't you? why don't I make you some tea?"
"um okay I can only stay very shortly."
"that's okay."
I walked into the house. I was trapped. rage does not do well when faced with kindness. Was this woman who had only been nice to me at fault that her daughter was a whore? The whole situation was entirely unfair to both of us.Why were we being thrown together to be punished by the consequences of another's actions? She made the tea. She even put out those cookies in a in tin that kindly women always seem to have. I poured the tea.
"So how is school going dear?"
"um its okay I think I am changing my major again"
"what to now?"
"comparative religion with a specialization in Afro-Carribean and in northern European."
"How are you going to work that then?"
"well I was going to look at the pantheons of each and point out the strange similarities between them. I haven't figured out what to argue is the reason why yet. I suspect it has something to do with the syncretic nature of the two religions."
"Syncretic?"
"sorry that means that the religions evolved making themselves more like other religions around them. In the case of Voodoo and the other Afro-Carribean religions they evolved to fit all the different African religions that were forcibly imported to the new world and then again to fit the saints of Catholicism when the African religions were persecuted."
"This is all interesting but what can you do with this degree?"
"Nothing, or write a book."

"nothing, or write a book" sounds like a plan
undergraduate education is not supposed to be job training anyway.
