I am so furious with people right now.
FURIOUS!
I've been keeping up to date on the whole Hurricane thing. It's so horrible. It's devastated and I can't even bring myself to think about what these people are going through. But do the people try and make it better for each other, sharing what they have, in most cases no. Granted, there are people down there so wonderful in nature that they are completely selfless in what they are doing.
But it's the others that make me wonder how cruel and selfish people can be. Raping 10 year olds? Stealing? Shooting cops? (I am against violence against cops, REALLY REALLY REALLY against it).
Here's a nice numbered list of things I'm in shock about.
1. Shooting helicopters down. The function of helicopters in this situation? No, not to bomb the people, or bring in troops to kill them. TO HELP THEM. Helicopters are working 24/7 to pluck people from the roofs of their homes where they have been stranded. So what should you do? SHOOT THEM DOWN of course! Hey, their just helping your neighbour you have known for 10 years get to safety! Soon they will be coming to get you as they go in straight lines across neighbourhoods rescuing people. But none of this matters. You should shoot it down. Why in the name of all that is good would such a thing strike you as a good idea. I hope whoever did that drowned. Taking safety away from countless numbers of opther people and trying to kill the brave person flying the helicopter is the most cowardly thing you can do.
Also, there's been people shooting down helicopters that are trying to land on hospitals to bring supplies to doctors and patients inside working to keep people alive and save peoples' lives. *applause*. So selfish.
2. Looting. Now, I understand taking food, diapers, general supplies, feminine products, underwear, children's clothes, even small radios and some batteries to keep up to date, but 20 pairs of jeans? Brand new TVs? PEOPLE'S COUCHES FROM THEIR HOMES? Looting is disgusting, unless it's for survival. Instead of going to a grocery store and taking a bag of potatoes and some cereal and canned food to sustain themselves and those stranded with them, people are breaking into all sorts of stores and houses and stealing whatever they can find. It's disgusting. Why in hell do you need CDs during a natural disaster. It makes me so mad.
3. Killing people there to help. Any murder during this time (unless you shoot a looter or someone shooting helicopters), is completely unjustifiable. It's outright disgusting. But killing someone who is trying to help, a national guards man, a volunteer from the Red Cross, or a police officer is just beyond comprehension. A police officer is there to help. They are doing their job, when they would much rather be at home or with their families. When they tell you to stop looting it is because it is against the law. In an everyday situation they would also tell you to stop looting the furniture/electronics/clothing store. I'm sure in this situation if you were taking children's clothes (in reasonable amounts, I'm not talking 50 Baby Gap sweaters), or food they wouldn't say a word to you. But when they tell you to stop ROBBING someone of their livelihood because you just NEED a toaster, its because YOU HAVE NO REASON TO BE DOING IT. So what should you do. NOT SHOOT THEM. A police officer was shot a couple days ago by a looter. After this, martial law was imposed (I'm not stating because of the incident, it just happened afterwards). I personally trust most of the law enforcement, at least in Canada, and I know if I was in that situation, I would want the po po to be able to shoot to kill people acting like jackasses and making the situation worse. I doubt they're going to shoot any looter, but a looter who is not listening to the LAW and is becoming hostile should have action taken against him instead of a family losing their mother/father/brother/sister etc because they were doing their job.
4. Rape. Seriously. In that stadium FULL of people? And they got away with it? I hope a mob finds and quarters any one doing that (especially to a TEN YEAR OLD) in the old fashioned horse way.
It's so sad that in this time of crisis people have to act this way. If people treated each other with respect, followed laws to the full extent possible in the situation, and helped each other out the situation would be far happier. I was thinking about donating money, but all I could think was that some person who just stole everything they could from an undamaged house would get it, and I felt so sick to my stomach. I'd rather go down there with tons of food, and help distribute it to people. I feel so bad for not helping, but all the ways I can manage at the moment feel so wrong.
.
I know it sounds horrible to say when hundreds of thousands of people are in that horrible situation, but I feel so helpless. Seeing all the human toil and struggle breaks my heart. To hear of all the women with newborns who can't feed or care for them devastates me.
At least it's a natural disaster and America can't go kill innocent children for this one...unless W. is so crazy he's going to fight the war on terrorism against THE WEATHER *duh duh duh*
