Alpha Bitch
I was recently sat with a friend discussing the details of my most recent "break up" and its subsequent renewal (i.e. falling out with someone then getting back together). Midway through the long, boring relating of events (I managed to eke it out to about twenty minutes though I could have done it with that first sentence) my friend suddenly turned to me and asked if I felt I needed an Alpha Male in my life. It struck me as such a great question - not to mention a very random one - that I sat pondering it for almost the same amount of time as I had been blathering about the initial point.
An "Alpha Male"? Do I or anyone else need one?
Initial answer, yes. In theory. Humans don't live well alone, even humans who dislike the human race don't work well by themselves. Seek out your nearest unwashed hermit for evidence. If they get sick or hungry they rely entirely on their own resources, and humans aren't notable for their ability to survive on anything other than brain power. We have to MAKE things: heat, light, food etc. and if we are incapable of procuring these things someone else has to do so instead. So we need another person, this person who then has power over the person with the need. Alpha.
For anything else to work would require something on a par with communism, wherein a large circle of people went out and gathered (for example) the things necessary to make a packed lunch for all. Someone would harvest the grain, someone else would get the salt, someone further would bake it to bread with the water and yeast from yet two more parties, and so on until each of the circle had an identical sandwich, apple and juice. All would be happy, yes? No. Some would envy the others their easier tasks and quarrel over who would be doing what the next day. Even if there was a rotation of task there still would be one who had to assume the dictation of initial events. Even the idea of having the lunch to begin with would start with a single voice. A voice that would be obeyed with respect as having come up with a good thought. Alpha.
So in the above example we need an Alpha. What then when it comes to relationships? Aren't they simply a smaller version of the lunchbox circle? Anyone who refers to their partner as equal is - to my mind at least - in denial. Even conjoined twins do different tasks. Two minds do not think alike. They merely work together, and whoever has the initiation of the plan and gets another to conform to their idea is, however briefly, the Alpha.
Some people are inherently Alpha, some people pretend to be, some would like to be, and others are content with a submissive status. But even Alpha need someone to be led by, be it in idealistic or potential form. These are the people who will be remembered, and not in a good way.
We are all members of our own little pack. Decide where you belong. As for me? If you can out-Alpha me, do it.
Fun Felidae Fact: I did an almightily stupid thing and forgot to post up the latest drawings I did on DeviantArt before I left the house yesterday. However, here's a link to it: http://thefelineone.deviantart.com

In my opinion a successful relationship isn't a alpha and a subordinate, nor two identical people. It's two halves, with their own odd shape, that find their compliment. Are each of you a better person, now that you have the other? Do you each bring to the table what the other is looking for? I see a number of people who say this is what a partner MUST have, MUST give to me or be to me, but very little about what they have to offer that partner in return.
Oh, and I hope your renewal is going well Reading your profile, seems like you are more inclined to be the alpha...
