STRIKE DAY 11
It has bee an interesting experience so far. I think many writers (solitary creatures by nature) are understanding the power of numbers we have and for the first time, being able to stand up for what they know is right. I believe the kids call that empowerment.
I live a block away from CBS Television City, so I just walk down there everyday at 6 am, grab my picket sign and walk in a circle for 4 hours. I have lost some weight and my feet look like they just did a tour in Nam. Blisters and I have a broken toe from a couple of months ago that has not completely healed because I did not take the doctor's advice. It hurts a bit, but not too much.
People drive by and honk support all day long. When I come home after my shift I sit in my office and listen to the honking until the picketing is over later in the day. There is a hotel across the street from the site and those poor tourists must not be happy. But they mostly came in to go to a taping of the Price is Right, so fuck 'em.
There are some great videos on HollywoodUnited.com, a writer created website that is not associated with the WGA - other than members did it on their own.
This strike is going to go on for a while. We are winning the public relations battle, which is amazing because we just assumed it was lost from the get go. Turns out they can't stop the internet. That is how we are getting our information out and it is very effective.
I still have to work, though. I am making a six episode show for the interweb and finishing a spec script that I am writing with a guy who worked on Mr. Show.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I don't expect anyone to take sides, of course. Particularly inasmuch as the whole donnybrook is king-hell ludicrous to begin with.

The Nation has a good article on the WGA's effective use of the web and video in getting their message out. I'm trying to convince my boss that this is the model for labor communications that we should be moving towards for out clients.
