So, this has been a pretty crappy year so far.my girlfriend left, cant find a job, went to my sons grandmothers funeral (not my mom, my exs mom), and then today was my grandmothers funeral, and my dog died... ok I made the last one I made up, I was on a roll, like a bad country song. It just has not been a great year. The funeral today wasnt horrible, mostly because my grandmother was old and had lots of health problems. So, I think I kind of expected it. Although, my mom took it pretty bad for obvious reasons. My grandmother had been living with my parents for the last 6 years, my mom had been taking care of her.
Anyway, today, as morbid as it may sound, as I was sitting at the service, I decide I need to layout some guidelines for my own funeral. The similarities between the 2 funerals Ive been to in the last 3 weeks made me realize how generic they can be. Its understandable; the funeral home is dealing with a grieving family, and is trying to make it as easy as possible for them. I think that is how they become generic, they offer the same choices to everyone, and service begin to look similar. Insert bible passage, song, prayer, bible passage, etc.presto, funeral service. Also, I thought, how hypocritical would it be to have bible passages read at my funeral, when Ive been so anti-religion for so long. So, my new project for the next few days will be to outline how I would want my service to be. I need to find a few appropriate songs and quotes/passages from my favorite authors/bands that will better represent my views on life, death, afterlife, and how I lived my life. Of course it will have to be something that changes as life goes on. Maybe, something to update once a year on New Years Eve, or my birthday.
Another observation today, have you heard the song Sissys Song, by Alan Jackson. Im not much of a fan of country music, but that song is depressing. It was played at both funerals. I helped make the slideshow DVD for todays funeral, and heard it over and over again.depressing.

Anyway, heres the songs I had in mind so far, I probably will need to narrow it down a bit more. I think I would prefer something a little more upbeat, not so much sadness. I feel like up, to this point, Ive had a pretty good life, and would like people to remember that.

Solid list. Yes, a little morbid to think about, but when all is said and done, it will be your funeral. The music played should be music you liked and the things spoken about should reflect who you were. I am thinking I may have to create one of these lists myself.

I am sorry that you had to go through all of this and I am especially sorry that your son had to experience losses so close together. That is a lot of sadness for a little one.

XOXO
