The evening started out well. Laura and I got all fancied up. She wore her awesome new shirt and did some nifty makeup stuff that I'm proud to say I gave some input on. Then I got a wee bit of makeup that made me look slightly like Orochimaru, from Naruto, but without the snake pupils. Then we headed off and spent a while driving around downtown wondering exactly where that old Live Arts building was. Eventually we parked on the street we knew it was on and walked down it until we came upon a band of wandering goths. It was Skunk's crew, which wasn't thrilling because he tends to be an ass and decided to kind of eye me up and down as we were getting directions. I can't say I was upset that he never showed up at the club. Anyway, eventually we got to...
So I'm not going to give a huge description, just the more important parts. For those of you wishing to find it in the future, it's behind Sheba, which is pretty far down East Market street right behind the Mall. It's huge compared to the Rose and had good ventilation and a place to hang out outside and get air. The lighting was no where near fully set up, but it was pretty good for what we had. And the sound was great, much better acoustics than the Rose. And the huge size of the dance floor was fantiastic. All it needs is some more lighting and some couches. I really hope we get the place.
Getting back into the place was definitely a flashbulb memory for me. Without even going into the familiar faces and such, I just had such an overwhelming feeling of coming home when I got back onto the dance floor. The heavy beats of the music mixing with the ever-present clinking of custom-added spikes and other such gothery. The sensuous flowing of girls wearing corests and skirts, with such a variety of outfits and hair that each was like a marvelous little shard of beauty, flowing around each other. And of course the guys, maybe not with the beauty or variety of the girls, but each with his own style of dress and dance, pounding away in contrast to the girls. It made me very very happy.
Despite the extreme happiness and familiarity, for a while I felt rather uncomfortable. It may have had something to do with my brush with Skunk, though I don't think so. Mostly, it has to do with my dancing. I like my dancing, and from what I've heard, other people tend to agree to one extent or another. But it's very different than most guys there. More arm stuff and much less stomping. I think when I first showed up on the scene, I was drawn to the nifty styles of people like Amelia and Rachel, which of course has led to a more faminie style for me I suppose. I've tried kind of realigning that, but it doesn't really work and I really don't want to. Anyway, normally this doesn't bother me, but it had been a long time, so I was getting used to me again.
So what broke this odd insecurity? Strangely enough, it was Rachel. I was really hoping she'd show up and sure enough she did and happiness ensued. Which is, of course, not unexpected. But suddenly I felt much more relaxed, which also isn't so unexpected, but the extent of it was very odd.
So the lineup was Silent Muse, Heretics in the Lab, In Tenebris. And...God dammit! I can't remember who came between Silent Muse and Heretics in the Lab! I can see the guy in my mind and remember the music. It know it isn't Synthetic Division. ARGH! Anyway. Silent Muse and the annameable band both did fairly well. The second one especially is improving. Heretics in the Lab, I've discovered, is much better when you're in a large setting, where you can distance yourself from the volume. And then In Tenebris, which is becoming incredibly good. They're well into overcoming some of the repetetion problems I think they used to have and I'm desperately awaiting their second album. And, as Adam has poiinted out, the lead singer happens to be a looker. Oh! And her dress was nifty because the back was just low enough to reveal her wing tatoos.
Towards the end...I think during Heretics in the Lab, an entire army or Laura's people showed up. Wayne, Nick, Rena, Jenn, and Adam. It made me miss Morgan. Well, I always miss Morgan. It made me miss her more. It was especially nice seeing Nick, actually, since it seems I never see him when Morgan is at Goucher, and he's a cool guy. And really was affectionate, which always makes me happy. And of course Adam did his crazy thing on the dance floor, which is always cool.
I was hoping UVA people would show and they didn't and I'm sad. Seeing Victoria in a goth setting would have been badass, but I guess she couldn't make it afterall, and I'm sure there will be other chances. As for Courtny and Jocylynn, I'm guessing you guys couldn't find it. That really sucks, I'm sorry. Hopefully we'll get the place and we can all go together soon.
Ok, so during the InTenebris show there was about the most ridiculous and bothersome display ever. Anyone who knows Rachel knows that she tends to enjoy fiding other attractive women on the dance floor of a lbi nature, and dancing with them in fun and exciting ways. So obviously that turns heads, BUT, they don't do it for that and it's a very controlled sort of thing. But apparently these two drunk-out-of-their-minds girls saw that Rachel and her friend were getting lots of attention from sideways glancing menfolk and decided they would like attention too. So they ran out onto the dance floor and in a stupor, alternated between swing-dancing TERRIBLY (one got close-lined. It was the highpoint) and trying to suck each other's face off like an old 1970's sci-fi B-Movie, like Attack of the Mole People. This went on for a few minutes, generally bothering people, until security took care of them.
Really, I don't know why I have a section about leaving. Laura and I grabbed Shakti, said our goodby's, and left. We walked back to my car, and drove to Teeter, and then back to Brown.
Hanging out with Shakti was awesome. The three of us talked and then watched What ABout Bob?, a fantastic movie. Then after a bit more talking, we all collapsed alseep on my bed, which admittedly, is not the best thing for holding three sleeping people.
Today was odd, but good. Laura had to wake up early and go work on a project, which was vrey sad. Shakti and I played SC II, and watched some Family Guy and Invader Zim. Then I: Drove Shakti home, drove back, drove Laura to the hair place, drove to Shakti's, drove back to the hair place, drove Shakti to the Downtown Mall, drove Laura back to CLemons, drove to Pet Forum, found nothing I wanted for acceptable prices, drove to JPA, came back here. And here I am, writing this, while talking to friends and waiting for Laura to get back so an evening of wonder can commence.
It ocurrs to me that I write lots of journal entires, and really don't mention Laura all that often. But if this seems to suggest that she's not an incredibly large part of my life then you have all been duped. Laura is wonderful and awesome and she's always makes the worst part of my day not matter and the best part of my day euphoric. So while I'm not going to be annoying and repetetive by stiicking her name into every post, you can be sure that if I talk about doing something during my day and Laura was there, she was the best part.
