I was wondering if, in the interest of scientific discovery, everyone'd send me a $20 bill. I'll explain:
While on our separate ways back from eating lunch, my friend S. (last mentioned June 27, 2004) and I were accosted by a remarkably unpleasant-looking and -smelling man who, after delivering a mumbled pitch of some sort, hit us up for some cash for food. S. gave him a dollar, and I gave him a $20 (because that's what I had, what with me being a huge crack dealer on the side and all). S. thought the $20 overly generous (her parsimony can be easily forgiven, as she has twin boys to feed, clothe, etc.), and she said to me, "You know, he's just going to spend it on booze or drugs."
I then had two thoughts: 1) if our positions were reversed, who wouldn't do the same? and 2) if one gives a person one finds unpleasant $20 and that person goes away, perhaps forever, wasn't that $20 well spent?
I then thought that an experiment with thought #2 involving the various people with whom I work and wish were far away might be in order, but S. convinced me that my more unpleasant co-workers were likely to misinterpret my generosity and not amble out of my life. Also, upon reflection, I supposed that I would be unlikely to ever have that many $20 bills.
Hell, for all I know there might not even be that many $20 bills.
