Today I got to join the medics on a trip to a mountain village that has been cut off since the typhoon. The only bridge there was completely destroyed so they haven't been able to travel into town. The people in the village have never seen white people in person before, so we were treated like movie stars. Each time we set up one of there medical clinics, the entire town shows up. We get about 100 people who need to see a doctor and everyone else is just curious.
Unfortunately one older woman found out she has parkinsons, and it was quite advanced. It was heartbreaking to see her break down when she found out. I wish we could do more for her but we just aren't equipped for anything serious. They can't afford to go to the hospital, and I hate that we can't do anything for them.
Unfortunately these situations are something we have to accept, and just do everything we can. Despite the bad situations, everyone here has an incredibly positive attitude, and they are working hard to get their country back to the way it was.
On a positive note, we may be allowed to have a couple beers once in a while. I'm sure that will do wonders for morale.
