Woo hooo! I had a lot of fun today! I didn't do a lot, but what I did do was cool.
I woke up at 3 (it was my friend's 12:01 last night...) to get ready for this fashion show that I was supposed to shoot, and got there by 4:15, 'cause it was supposed to start at 4:30. I was planning on borrowing a lens from the newpaper office though, and I was bummed to find that our equipment cabinet was locked, and I didn't have the key!
I called my photo editor to see if he could come down and unlock it, but he didn't pick up, and I was starting to worry, 'cause the lens I had wasn't going to do the greatest job... (it was a bit dark in there, and I either had my f1.8 50mm or my f5.6 18-55mm... the one in the office was an f2.8 24-70mm USM lens...)... So yeah, I was a bit worried, 'cause the fashion show was supposed to start at 4:30, and I couldn't get a hold of him... Well, a few models were late, and by around 5:15, the show still hadn't started, and my editor finally called! He was 15 min. away and would head over. After a few minutes, I noticed an odd smell in the air, like burning... Shortly after that, the fire alarms went off and everyone had to evacuate! I felt bad for my friend who was putting on the show, but I was happy that it was going to be postponed just a bit longer, so I could get the right lens, and since this whole thing was a big benefit event, the people were all cool and understanding of it being delayed, because the whole reason they were there was that they're nice people!
As the people started to evacuate, I got out my camera and started shooting... I wasn't there for the paper, my friend has just asked me to shoot it, but I knew that would be a good story, so I went for it! When the fire trucks showed up, I started shooting them and the firefighters... i got some great shots! The fire itself was pretty benign... some vent had caught on fire or something... but after about 20 minutes we were allowed back in. During all of this, my editor showed up and gave me the key to the equipment, so I went down, got my lens (the event was in the same building as the newpaper office, by the way), and got to use it to shoot the show! It REALLY helped to have that lens, and I got some great shots. It was also just a lot of fun shooting a fashion show, as it was my first time at that kind of event! I was also just stoked 'cause it was a really nice lens, and it was the first time I'd really gotten to use it.
Anyway, this story is getting way too long, but basically the show was a lot of fun, and it reminded me how much I love photography, which made me really happy. I'm also stoked 'cause these models are apparently interested in getting the pictures for their portfolios, and I'm hoping to make some cash from that... possibly enough to be able to buy a new camera (20D!), since I am really growing out of what my current camera can give me... I'm also stoked, 'cause now that I know more models on campus, I can see if any of them want to do some more shots (and I'd do that for free!), just so I can build a portfolio and get used to my lights and stuff.
Anyway, after that I just chilled with my a couple of relatively new friends that I get along with pretty well, and that was cool.
There was also this cute girl at round table that was really cool, and she seemed like she really wanted my friend and I to come back (like, she told us when she works this week, and shen she doesn't...), so that was cool!
So yeah, fun day, just what I needed... Things have been rocky lately, but today was just a purely good day!
