A Drunken Man's Praise Of Sobriety
Come swish around, my pretty punk,
And keep me dancing still
That I may stay a sober man
Although I drink my fill.
Sobriety is a jewel
That I do much adore;
And therefore keep me dancing
Though drunkards lie and snore.
O mind your feet, O mind your feet,
Keep dancing like a wave,
And under every dancer
A dead man in his grave.
No ups and downs, my pretty,
A mermaid, not a punk;
A drunkard is a dead man,
And all dead men are drunk.
William Butler Yeats
A little thought on my current staus courtesy of a fellow mick. I was going to quote Baudelaire but I wouldn't want my friend thinking I copied her shit. (Look up Be Drunken if you're interested.) Besides, that's a poem that needs to be quoted when I am drinking again. Right now I'm in, what I like to call, Irish Lent. Instead of Lent starting on Ash Wed. and ending on Easter, mine starts (usually) the day after Super Bowl and goes until St. Patrick's. Why? Because no self respecting Irish man quits drinking when St. Pat's is in the middle of it. This year, I started even earlier because I'm leaving on the 28th for Ireland. It seems to be taking it's time. I don't quite remember what day I started (Somewhere in the first week of January I think) but I still have twenty two more days to go. Then it's all cuban cigars, unpasteurized Guinness and loads of Bushmill's for 19 days straight. My liver is gonna look like a cross between a smoker's lung and cow poop. After that I'm gonna probably quit drinking again for while. (After the party that is. I already have the keg of green beer ordered.)
Nothing really is happening. I'm gonna start a New Year's resolution (If I can change my Lent habits, I guess I can change my New Year's ones also.) I wanna read more. I have a stack of books which is about four feet high just waiting to be read. So, if you talk to me, give me shit if you don't think I've been reading enough. That and swim laps on Sat. mornings.
P.S. If you were wondering, the party is gonna be on the 31st of March. Everyone is invited. It's too bad that most of my friends on this site live thousands of miles away.
