A friend told me recently that she and her boyfriend have a nickname for their dog in addition to the dog's name. But, I thought, isn't the dog's name itself sort of a nickname? The dog's parents didn't name him. Any name given to someone other than the name given to that being by their parents at birth is a nickname, correct?
