Federal funding for autism research remains woefully inadequate, especially in comparison to other diseases and disorders that affect children. It is almost certain the growth in the NIH budget will only increase at the rate of inflation for the foreseeable future. It is very unlikely that there will be any additional growth in the federal research commitment on autism if we look only to the NIH as a source of funding.
Despite this, as the number of families affected by autism has continued to increase substantially, it's fair to say that the federal response to the crisis in autism is not adequate.
That is why They have already established a record of funding significant medical research for other diseases. Based on recent prevalence and cost estimates, at least 4,600 children and minor dependents of Active Duty military families alone have autism, and the cost of their care and treatment may well exceed $200 million per year.
Now, we need your help. We urge you to contact your U.S. Representative and Senators to urge them to support this funding request. Please send a brief e-mail to the House and Senate offices that represent you.
E-mail addresses for your representatives can be found on the U.S. Senate Web site and the U.S. House of Representatives Web site, respectively.
