I just got back from Haiti and South America. I was actually in Haiti a few days after the earthquake. What a mess. The country was not in good shape to begin with and this just added insult to injury. The frustrating thing was the disorganized attempt by all the random government agencies to help. There were agencies there that I a have never even heard of... and they all had to have their piece of the action. And, of course, they all did things differently and would not cooperate with each other. There were so many other countries helping out. I don't think they got the attention they deserved. Lots of doctors from Israel and Japan. Aid workers from Brazil, Germany and the UK. Here are some pics...
The top left corner was the Presidential Palace. You can sort of see how it's collapsed. In the middle is a church that's obviously in bad shape.
This is street level damage. The collapsed buildings. The smoke on the left is coming from where they were burning trash to keep disease down.
The USS COMFORT anchored in the bay. They took a lot of the wounded. My hat's off to these guys.
With many of the roads blocked, most of the supplies were delivered by these guys. The Navy helicopters did most of the work. I can't tell you how many lives these guys saved by taking people to get medical attention.
I hope it's better down there now.
