i'm back from the dead. vegas is 270 miles behind me, and two months of working overtime at a job that leaves me feeling unfulfilled are finally over.
actually, vegas wasn't as bad as i expected. we had to assemble some modular booths that we had built in the shop, but they had never been fully assembled and no one had tested them to see how they would hold up to the abuse that the clients were definitely going to dish out. in the end, they worked out fine, which was a great relief to me because i was responsible for welding about half of them, and i wasn't very confident about how well they would hold up because i'm not very experienced when it comes to welding aluminum.
the other thing that made vegas kind of easy was that everything went up and came down pretty quickly. really, we only had one long day, which was about 7am to midnight. i expected us to be doing that every day!
the light schedule gave me time to relax and go see some shit. we had the star trek experience, and went on the race to atlantis with a bunch of funny black girls from brooklyn. we went to a couple of lame parties. oddly, my old roomate was djing one of them. sometimes i feel bad for him, because he's a celebrity sibling, and when you go to a party you hear people say, "see that guy, he's so-and-so's brother." but i guess he reaps the rewards, too, so let them talk. somehow, i missed the pirate show, but i went on "the bigshot" and "speed: the ride," and lost some money, so i guess vegas was all right...
but in the end i was happy to leave. i'm sick of diversions. it''s time to start making power moves.
two things before i do, though. i finally read house of leaves, which i bought for myself using gift certificates from christmas. it was really good. i love it when things are really creepy, but also get your brain working about how your own life is going. aside from johnny living in LA and talking about silverlake and stuff, i mostly identified with the brother, tom, who doesn't have the ambition and assertiveness to be as successful as his brother, and who has been sort of drifting through life the way that i feel like i have been for the past couple of years. in the end, he has the strength to do what will navidson couldn't. i'd like to think that i do, too.
and i saw a dude this morning at millie's wearing an sg sweatshirt.
