i've gotten a little sick of writing, "i can't find a place to live and i hate my job," over and over again, so i'll bore myself recounting some of the things i did after work...
first i went to the library, because i have this friend, who actually is sort of rich and has hired me to work in a few different capacities, and also has let me live at his house for months and months (note: it is not the friend whose closet i'm living in now.). anyway, this other friend, who i will call..."the count," has a birthday tomorrow, and i was thinking of making a mix cd for him. for the most part, i think that mix cd's are a pretty bogus gift, but i want to give him something that i "made," and i know i have a lot of music that he has never heard and would like if he did. he has heard me listening to stuff at his house and asked who it was, etc.
the count has sort of an artistic background, and he is really REALLY creative, and so i thought it would be cool to make a jacket for the cd i'm giving him. i figured i'd just use a paper bag and draw or stencil some weird design onto it. he is the one who lent me the uzumaki comics to read (read them! or watch the movie, then you'll be one up on me.), and i know he is really fascinated by the spiral theme. i figured that the round shape of a cd would be really condusive to a spiral, so i went to the library to see if i could find a book that would have bugs or plants that form natural spirals, because that is a little more creepy than just drawing a spiral. who's with me?
i might mention that i live in LA, and so there is basically only one good library, the central branch, which is not the one i went to. i swear, just walk into any other branch and it will become abundantly clear that no one in this city reads. i frequently go to the los feliz branch and i never ever find what i am looking for. obviously that's because i am never looking for a video, since a third of the shelves there seem to be taken up by vhs tapes.
i DID find some books about wildflowers in california, wich was sort of close to what i wanted, but i found no usable illustrations. on my way out, though, i happened to glance at a cart that had a big red book on it that said "stray bullets." i opened it up, and it had a .38 twisted into a spiral, and i thought, "that's not what i want, but it IS a sign that i should read this book." it turned out to be a really great crime comic, which is a collection of stories about people who's lives are altered in a tragic or violent moment. my favorite stories were about a girl named ginny who sees two guys get murdered right after watching star wars. i think she's seven. it's REALLY good.
also, i went to this health food store to get some salsa to go with my dinner, and the guy behind me in line was the person who made the salsa i was buying. coincidence? maybe, but lately i tend to think that i'm at the center of some weird cosmic phenomenon. there's been a lot of "i was just thinking about you when you called"s and stuff.
after that i came home, made some rice and bean burritos, read that comic, and here i am.
