so tomorrow is my last day of freedom. i'm excited though. apparently they rarely make first year employees head guard, but i guess i look pretty good on paper and impressed the right people! go me!
i went over to the park today to talk to my supervisor, who i met briefly on friday at head guard training, and to just get an idea of what to expect at the park. he said he was very impressed with me taking initiative and not just showing up the day i'm supposed to start with no idea of what i'm doing. i didn't do it to earn brownie points, i genuinely wanted to be more prepared for the job, especially since i've never worked there before. and because head guard is a lot more work than i thought, not that thats bad. i had to go to an extra day of training to earn my lifeguard management certification, and on top of lifeguarding i will also be making the guard schedule, running in-service trainings, evaluating my guards, running safety checks, making sure the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) is practiced at least 2x a week, making sure my guards and i do 30 minute work outs 3x a week and swim 200 yards a day, keeping records and all jazz, and the lifeguards come to me if they have an issue, want to request time off, etc. and if there were an emergency, i'm the one to activate the EAP and will be leading my guards in responding to the situation.
oh yea i've been saying "guards" like i have a few. ideally i should have a crew of 5 guards, to have a good amount of coverage, to help assist in emergencies, all that. well i have one. yes, ONE. we can technically be open with just two guards but it means that either we have zero days off, or we have to both take the same two days off and the beach will just be open as an unguarded waterfront for people to swim at their own risk. ugh yea thats been my head ache for the past few days. i'm hoping they can send some from another park or something or that we get more and it gets sorted out soon.
i'm just excited to get started. despite being really stressed out right now i'm excited to get things going and to be working outside all summer. should be fun!
well i was going to try to get to sleep early tonight to prepare myself for a real sleep schedule. but that didn't happen... oh well, i'll try again tomorrow.
