ok, so lately i've been getting this vibe from a lot of people that the human race is the worst thing this planet has ever seen or something. i've been getting the impression that people think that the human race has gotten to large and to technologically advanced to be "good." that the human race is "evil." it's really gotten on my nerves and i want to speak out about it.
first, the human race is not "evil," or at least it is no more evil than anything else on this planet. lately i've gotten the sense that people think that nature is good and humanity is bad. humanity is more compassionate that nature has ever been. nature is cold, uncaring, heartless, brutal, murderous, and unforgiving. nature would sooner starve and animal than feed it. nature culls the weak and rewards the strong. humans think we're horrible because we commit genocides and murders and rob and rape. nature does all these things! male animals fight and kill for the rights to rape entire groups of females in numerous species. every single species on the planet will consume all the resources in its environment as quickly as possible, often to the point where the species will starve because of its mismanagement of resources. nature has annihilated more species into the history books than currently exist on this planet. just remember, extinction is a natural occurrence. humanity helps those less fortunate. humanity sends search parties for a lost individual. humanity tries to lessen its impact on the environment and prevent extinction. what other species does these things? all species pollute. all species replaced and removed a less adapted species that came before it. nature thrives on competition, and the losers are left to the fossil record.
second, the human race can never be to technologically advanced. for the majority of our existence, the human species would be considered an endangered species by our own standards. it is only very recently when the number of women who died during child birth lowered, child mortality dropped off significantly, and the average life span increased beyond half a century. we don't have nature to thank for these changes. we have only the technological advancements of the species. improvements in medicine and agricultural technologies have allowed us to fight disease, famine, and starvation. technology is the adaptation that has kept humanity from being just another species that failed. with every technological advancement we remove ourselves from nature. and that is a good thing. because nature would gladly kill us to feed another species.
so yes, humans can be violent, prejudiced, ignorant, and mean. but that's natural. every time you educate a person, or every time a person chooses peace over war, you are fighting back against the natural order of things. i don't want the natural order. i want humanity to continue to progress scientifically, and maybe, just maybe, we'll have the chance to live for a couple thousand years before the sun shifts spectrum or some massive asteroid turns the atmosphere to black plasma. it is only our ability to adapt through technology that will safe us from extinction when that happens.
