so i just got out of my Estate and Gift Tax final exam. It will probably be my last tax exam from law school. I'm almost sad that I won't be taking Taxation of Business Transaction next semester. It would be really interesting, but it doesn't fit with my career path, and it would require me to take more than 1 final next semester.
Instead I'll have to settle with participating in VITA to get my tax fix. For those of you who don't know what VITA is, it is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Every spring i volunteer for about hundred hours completing low income person's tax returns for them. It is estimated that $10 million dollars in Earn Income Credits go unclaimed by tax payers in New York State alone because they didn't know the money was available. This means the NY economy is missing out on $10,000,000 that could be fed directly into the pockets of the poor tax payers of the state!
I love this program because it rewards people who work. Not that I'm opposed to welfare or anything, because I'm not. Its just nice to see a program that helps people who help themselves. To often programs (like welfare and section 8) actually punish people who try and make more money for themselves. And with the earned income tax credit you can possibly give a person an income tax return that is more than twice their annual income!!
there is no more beautiful sight than a strung out single working mother realizing that she's going to get a check for $10,000 from the government for being such a hard worker.
So get out and volunteer!!!!! Contact me if you would like information about how to volunteer!
