Yay... went to Bulldogs Cafe this afternoon. Totally awesome place. The guy who runs/owns it is the "National Barista Champion." Which yay -- big deal of course, except that whatever it is that he puts in his coffees (deserts really)... is amazing. He even does the neat little designs and such in the creme of the lattes n stuff.

It's like art.

So I was there to meet up with some work friends. Amongst friendly things to talk about, it eventually -- and obviously -- came around to discussing work. Which at this moment, we're rather stressed about... as many of us are getting our hours cut and one of us hasn't even been paid yet... which is just the kind of drama a good conversation over the best kind of coffee in town can settle.

We talked about our backup plans in case things don't work out and we're all stranded looking for jobs. Needless to say the prospect of being unemployed for any of us is a totally bad scenario. So what are we going to do? What should we do?

I brought up my idea of starting my own design/tech company. I laid down my ideas pretty flat out and just rolled with it, hoping I wasn't "jumping the gun" so to speak. Relieved -- I think it turned out well and perhaps... even for the better. They were all into it and thought it could be a good idea. So we might all pitch in our extra time to it and see if we can't build something up while we struggle to stay employed.

Personally, I think it's a sinking ship. I'm not getting paid nearly what my skill set is worth... my time has been nearly 100% client-billable and yet I'm told that if we keep it 75% everything should be good. But is it? Sadly... no.

I don't know for certain why things are going the way they are, but I do have my thoughts. I think the company is branching into an industry they don't know how to manage. And I think that my boss is too much of a micro-manager to give the reins to someone who know what they're doing (ie: ME -- the guy they hired for this stuff). Combined with their over-spending on human resources they don't particularly need and maintaining convoluted processes... I think it's starting to be a not-so-good thing.

Sigh -- they've been keeping me employed for almost a year and nearly have me on my feet again. I really like my bosses and stuff... but I want a million before thirty and if they're cutting my hours already while under-paying me and not even using me for what I'm worth -- they don't leave much choice.

It's thin ice out there right now... I hope I don't fall in again.
