What an amazing weekend! Of course Friday was the SGChicago gettogether, which as you already know was as cool as a two-headed cat. Then on Saturday we went to this really interesting art event that was half organized by the wife of my artist moving guy (see the middle of this old journal for /that/ story). It was probably a dozen mostly local (meaning Rogers Park) artists, and they had their work on display from 6 until 8 in the evening--basically stuff they want to get rid of, but for the most part it was all really nice, some really incredible work. So then at eight o'clock--it was called "Running with Art"--at eight o'clock you pick a piece you like and you put whatever money you want to pay for it in this envelope that belongs to the specific artist and then you just take it. It's yours. No chatting witht gallery owner and having them tell you you need to wait until the show goes down and then not even letting you touch it or whatever. So that was cool. We ended up buying two of the mover's pieces. We really wanted one of his wife's, we like her too, M ran into them at the movies a few months ago and we really want them to be our friends--which is not why we're buying their art, not to make them our friends, although maybe it is sort of--more that we'd like to think they are a little bit already our friends and we want to support them. So anyway, I got these birds:
(sorry about the picture quality) and M got this which is called Waterpark
. We really wanted one of his wife's pieces but all the ones we really liked were gone by the time we were done chatting with him. We didn't stay late--we are bad at socializing in largeish groups.
Then on Sunday I went out with my dear dear friend L who was in town from Boston. We drove in her father's car tyo the Abbey Pub and parked and huddled down and did the tiniest little amount of cocaine that she somehow had left from some other, more debacherous, night (oh, don't be so scandalized. I hadn't touched the stuff in a year.5 and it will probably be that long before I see it again. I am not nearly cool enough to be an addict) and I can't say it had much effect except to cause me to play at being charming and pigeontoed. The reason we were there was to see (drumroll er whatever) Dj Flashbulb who is apparently very big on myspace and in Tokyo. He is also the exboyfriend of a friend of L's and mine (she is much better friends with L than with me) so we talked to him for while and then danced a bit to his undanceable music (I see that he has talent...I guess I just need a beat) and I watched all the hipster girls with their striped skirts and creative haircuts and wondered if we would be friends.
Shit gotta go to work.
bye.
