this is still amusing:

Ummm....so I just had this weird conversation with the dude at Rainbow Grocery. I called him up and said "Do you have paneer?" and he was all "Could you repeat that?"
"Paneer? It's an Indian cheese. A really soft cheese?"
"Can you hold on a minute?"
"Sure"
"Okay, by Red Hill Farms?"
"Ummm..."
"Or Cowgirl Creamery?
"It doesn't really matter who it's by."
"Okay. Can you spell it, please."
"Yeah. Well, it's either p-a-n-e-e-r or p-a-n-i-r. Depending on...well, they're both right."
"Oh, for Indian cooking,right?"
"Right."
"Yeah, we don't have that right now. Try Bombay Bazaar on Valencia."
"Oh, okay, thanks a lot."
Here's the really weird part. Just as I was getting ready to hang up, he says "Oh, and it's paneer, by the way."
"Umm...what did I say?"
"No, you didn't mispronounce it. It's just spelled two different ways."
