Does anyone know anything about tenants rights (esp in CA) when it comes to lengthy repairs that make parts of your home uninhabitable?

So pA pokes me two nights ago and say "this guy is coming by at 8:00 tomorrow morning to look at the place"

"mmkay. I'll be here."

So dude shows up at 8, says "Is pA here?"

"No, he went to work."

"I need to see his bedroom."

"Okay....what do you need to do?"

"I tear down the wall. Then I put up a new wall. Then I do the shower. That takes three days."

"Okay, so our bedroom will be done whe I get home from school today?"

"No."

"Okay, so where am I going to sleep tonight?"

"You sleep in there too?"

By this point, Ceeja is out of the shower, poor thing, in her towel. There are obviously only 2 bedrooms, so unless he thinks Ceeja and I are sleeping together, which, whatever, no reason he should be shocked that I, too, sleep in pA's room.

"Okay, I come back tomorrow. 8 o'clock. You have time to move your stuff away from the walls."

So he's back, and they're pounding, and there is a big plastic sheet separating my room in half, and we decided last night that they're not allowed to be here when no one is home, so I'm kicking him out at one, but dude, there's no wall in my bedroom!!! And god only knows when there'll be a wall in my bedroom. And then I'll have a bedroom but no shower.

I think my landlord should be paying us to stay in a hotel. What do you think?

as i understand it, you can withhold your rent for the portion of the place that's uninhabitable, but it has to be put into an account (escrow?) so that you can show intent to pay.

btw ... i put new pics of my scooter on my page ...

Yeah, that sure felt like a sitcom moment when I came out of the shower. I should've dropped my towel in shock. Then the laugh track would've set in....
