As many of you are aware my grandmother was on life support for the past several days. Well, she went home to be with the Lord at 12am EST today. She is now at peace. Her one dream for me was to be the most independent person I could be and to never let my disability hinder me from living a happy, productive, and successful life. She loved seeing me reach goals that doctors said were impossible. Prior to her becoming ill she knew that my mobility had declined. This saddened her and I both greatly. I made a promise to myself and her that one day I would walk again. I plan on keeping that promise. It is going to be hard and take lots of work, sweat, dedication, and support, but I will do anything to show her that once again I defeated the illness that I was born with. So I dedicate this blog to my angel of a grandmother who is now looking down on me from heaven. Momaw Ruth, this is for you.
First, I am going to take a moment to apologize. This is going to be quite a lengthy blog. I please ask of you to take the time to read it. I must say I am truly blessed to be where I am today. I am so thankful to be with the wonderful fiance I am and be surrounded by his wonderful family, including my stepson, Brandon. I have never been so happy in my life. I only have one complaint about my life as of recent. I have not been able to walk with my crutches since moving in with him three years ago. I am now totally confined to a wheelchair. This breaks my heart. I have always walked with assistance whether it be a walker or crutches since the age of three.
As I stated previously, my wish from my grandmother and I was for me to walk again. We could even call it a New Years Resolution if you wanted. How is this possible you ask? I need to be able to get the device to prevent drop foot, which is my main impairment with mobility at the moment, It is called the "WALKAIDE SYSTEM." Sadly, my insurance will not cover the device and it costs roughly around $5000. I started a fundraiser previously in which I have gotten some very generous donations, some of which have been from fellow SG members. That site will no longer running as of December 31st and I will no longer be able to receive donations there. Therefore, I started a new fundraising page. Up to this point, I do not nearly have enough for the device. Total, I have around $200 in combination between the old site and this new one.
Help me make our dream of walking come true and donate to my fundraiser and make this the best year ever! Let's go out of 2012 with a bang and excuse the pun, but "start 2013 on the right foot." Below I will post links to the fundraiser and more information about the "WALKAIDE SYSTEM" for those of you who are curious....
