Still at work on a Friday evening after spending roughly four hours at the always-inviting Jupiter. That'll teach me.
The upside, though, is that while I'm finishing up the day's work, I get to listen to AS IS NOW, the latest album by Paul Weller. Last year's STUDIO 150 was a bit of a disappointment for me. (Not a huge fan of covers albums, what can I say?) ILLUMINATION was good, but not quite as "great" as the critics claimed it to be. I liked HELIOCENTRIC more than most other PW fans seemed to and I thought HEAVY SOUL was okay.
But AS IS NOW kicks STANLEY ROAD'S ass, and may actually be my favorite Paul Weller solo album after PAUL WELLER and WILD WOOD. The man's in fine voice and there are some great tunes on this album. Nice variety of stuff, too. Counting his albums with The Jam and The Style Council, this is his 19th studio album, and considering he started making the bloody things in 1977, I'd say he's on fine form.
And the horns on "The Start of Forever" are to die for.
