So I went to summer slaughter yesterday, pretty awesomeville, but for those interested is my rundown on the bands I managed to catch (I didn't get there until 5pm).
Decrepit Birth - They were in the middle of playing when I saw them, some very thumpy death that wasn't half bad but I was not that big into them. Proceeded to see the leader singer meander around the venue at several different times throughout the night.
After The Burial - WOW, was not expecting that. They were effing solid, I had never heard them before but their kind of sumerian-core they played was really good. Lots of dueling guitar leads with one neon red and one neon green guitar for extra awesome. Breakdowns and soloing makes me happy plus they were so full of energy so the crowd and I really liked them.
Beneath the Massacre - I've always had trouble just listening to BTM albums because after a song or 2 they all blend together. Sadly the live show is no exception. They can play insanely fast and technical, it just has a habit of all merging together so I can't pick the damn songs apart. They just really need to improve on their songwriting to make some songs more memorable at all. I recognized they did society's disposable son cause it was the first and they did our common grave and lithium overdose off of dystopia, but other than those I could not tell the other songs apart.
Origin - Same as BTM with the picking apart songs, they are a bit better in that department though. They basically played their style of breakneck deathgrinding, which isn't really my cup of tea. He had a very amusing way of talking (growling) to the audience, or shall I say specific, cause if he went around talking like that all the time I would just follow him around to hear it.
Born of Osiris - Wow, a lot of people had came out for this band and it was totally worth it. They were spot on their game and while I found that their most recent album had an issue of lack of variety between songs, their live show is totally the opposite. Plus they had like 6 people on stage and were all really bouncing all over the place. They played stuff off of both albums and they were a lot of fun.
Winds of Plague - Awesome, they were on, completely on. Great stage presence and are far less wigger slam-ish live. They played 1 new song which I didn't catch the name of, but was actually really good. They were awesome, because if you knew the songs you could song along to: reloaded (the last song and easily the most fun to belt out), the impaler, and decimate the weak. They are a very good live band, tons o fun.
Darkest Hour - Best band of the night for me, They had the best stage presence played tracks from many different albums. The audience wasn't as pumped for them though, had a big pit that was empty sometimes =(. I never feel that darkest hour gets the love they deserve whenever they come. They played one song off of the eternal return, and some off of the older albums. They were really on in terms of bouncy, they were flying all over over the stage and even did the pyramid in the sadist nation. Easily the best performance of the night.
Ensiferum - not my type of band so I took this time to rest and gave them a miss, from what I saw on the cameras from outside, not my kinda thing.
Necrophagist - I was really tired at this point and a bunch of the crowd had already left at this point. My buddy who i ran into there best described Necrophagist as 'the dream-theater of tech-death.' I was inclined to believe, as they suffer from BTM syndrome but since they are more proggy it's not so much of a problem, just the music was ridiculously repetitive especially since I am not the biggest fan of them in the first place.
All In all: came outta there with 3 shirts (an affliction tour shirt, a darkest hour one, and a btm one), met all the members of winds of plague and darkest hour and got signed posters from both and had a boatload of fun. Some time in the next few weeks I'll be making my way down to ottawa to go bug the HQ's of a few places that I could end up working for in the future. Then after that, when I get back its 10 for 10, possibly thrash and burn and the G road test. After that, it will just be to get stuff ready for me to move back to peterborough. But I've still got to see what other surprises this week brings.
