Facebook Fast
Blogger, Anne Jackson, says the web creates connection but not community.
I have to agree that these online networking sites change our day to day lives, social plans, and can be considered just a connection. On the other hand I think that sites like this are important to keep in touch and feel part of a community. Being on the road all year round I need a place to feel welcome and at home, to write my thoughts, to create new relationships and personal connections. Yes, I've seen those kids that like to add everyone and their mother and obviously that's not truly a community. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values in a shared location. I believe this word no longer has geographical limitations and that sites such as SG and Facebook can become a community, it just depends on the beholder. I myself add many people I do not know but I'm also open to meeting people and actually have. Since joining SG I've met over two dozen members and I'm very glad to have met each and every one of them. I find it comforting to know that each state I now move to I can easily make friends with common interests. Thats a great feeling when you travel as much as me. Anyways the point I was going for is that online networking sites can in fact improve ones lifestyle and provide as a community. Times get busy and I'm not around much but I love my friends here and I'm very grateful for this COMMUNITY in which I have been able to explore over these past few months.
