I think that the future is made out of magic. Materials science has always been one of the most important aspects of human discovery and development. The question is always what will come in the future and where will it take us. It is always a complicated question because most often those who conjecture about the future, especially those that say that something is impossible look at things as if the technology, society, and materials of today will persist into the future. As it has shown there are some aspects of humanity and society that will never change and there are others that have always changed. Ancient greeks and through the renaissance had to make everything they had by hand from simply processed materials, wood, bronze, iron, simple steels, materials acquired from animal and plant processing. While they are good materials they have their limitations. While the intellect is every bit as present then as it is at modern times. Still they may have dreamed of the future but in the context of their own experience. When we trot out bits of yesteryear future as people like to due to the fact that one of the previous great areas of future conjecture the post war years where the united states had just rose to the top of the pack in science and manufacturing so people thought that anything is possible. They had all of these predictions of the future that would be taking place now. So their technology and concepts look quaint and comical as their dreams and designs were limited to the context of their experience. Sometimes it is those who think about the future in a comical sense as well as a few others who take real leaps who develop ideas that seem prophetic in retrospect. We went from wax cylinders to vinyl albums and magnetic tape, to laser based optical drives. Now we have everyone chasing down the public dollar to make everything about the cloud and in popular culture you dont even hear about people talking about new media. It is all cloud internet. Yet in some areas they are upgrading to new optical drives and there are places all over working on advancing data storage. star trek had data stored on crystals.
I have been watching a bunch of science fiction themed movies lately and they use the material science to demonstrate the advancement, superiority, and alienness of beings from the future or another planet. A lot of times I have seen where they like to put that something is made out of some elements not on the periodic chart. That is something that always has me intrigued because basically all of the elements that are new are negligible science experiments that last moments in a lab after they slam a couple of atoms together to see what happens. Is it possible that one day we will make new elements that are stable new elements that one might use in materials? Yes, I think that maybe down the line they could discover some bizarre mix of atomic physics that allows them to reach some level of stability after they get far enough down on the chart, but those atoms would be so heavy and dense they would only be good for armor and weights. I think that the future is in magic. When I watch harry potter movies I think about how does that work? How would you make these magical things happen? Clearly you would need nanotechnology and exotic energy sources. What will make the future happen and move us into the magical singularity is to harness these technologies effectively. When objects cease being simply solid objects and layers of complex molecular machinery with the right high energy power source anything and everything will become possible. When you add biotechnology to that and then you really have the future. You could really have the world of harry potter in an instant. The surreal cartoon world of the 1920s? yes, you can have that. A world like futurama? easily. Any fantasy, novel, movie, whatever that you dream of would be possible. There are so many pieces. I wish that I could express all that I can see.
