so i just got back from the Toronto edition of the AFI "Decemberunderground" CD release party. needless to say I'm glad i went. we were treated to a preview listen of the new album (out 6/6/06) and if you pre-ordered it the gave you a complementary CD with the first single "Miss Murder" and an unreleased track not on the album.
the new album wasn't bad, but for the people that didn't like STS, you're not going to like this one. i enjoyed the latter half of the disc moreso that the first half. There are some dancy numbers, but nothing that jumped out at me as a single. i don't think this is going to be the album that breaks them into that next level...
and then we had another treat. as soon as the album finished playing, the house lights dropped. Yes, the rumours going around the club were true - we were getting a special live performance from AFI in a small intimate club.
They played a short set, running mostly off of STS, a couple songs off of Art of Drowning, the new single "Miss Murder" and "Rabbits are Roadkill" off of the Myspace Records comp. There were a couple of requests - "Cereal Wars" being one, to which Davey shook his head, laughed and replied, "We're not going to play that". He did thank us for coming out and joked that they were doing all this promotion in Toronto today, that how could you not know that they were going to play.
all in all, a fun time was had and i'm glad i made it out to what'll probably be the smallest venue i'll ever see them play
(some crappy phone camera photos - i took others that i gotta get developed and i'll post if they're half decent)
