Ok so here's the long story (I think I've settled down enough to construct sentences now)
We had a great time being back home in Brisbane, seeing friends and fam, keeping every hour filled with visits and shopping and drinking. It was awesome.
Monday night was the nine inch nails gig. We managed to get right up the front, centre stage, centre moshpit. It's been a few years since being in a heavy moshpit, the heaviest probably being the last nin gig in 2000. I was a little concerned especially as we had our cameras on us and I didn't want them crushed. In general the crowd was really well behaved. Everyone was going nuts but there wasn't exactly wankers slamming into people or jumping on our heads (except for one fuckwit who bashed me in the eye. Me> ), it was a very collective atmosphere with uncontrolled dancing and moshing around. An awesome vibe, like thousands of people E-ing to fast music. No one could stand still or even breathe at a normal rate. It was a total overload of the senses, lots of goosebump moments and times where you just had to go crazy and scream and have a fit or cry. What an incredible drug.
The band playing flawlessly, they were full of energy and put on one hell of a show. The sound was huge, the lights were pretty, the setlist was a great mix. It was totally perfect.
So we go home on one hell of a high and collapse with ringing ears. The next morning we're up early, backpacks on and off to the airport to come back to nz. We're waiting for our boarding call in the lounge and a bunch of dudes walk by...looking a lot like NIN except no Trent. I recognized Twiggy first cos I'm not as familiar with the newer guys. I could not believe it, they were getting on our plane.
As we board we stick our heads in business class and there they are, the band minus Trent (we figured he must've left on a different flight or something) and then we're shuffled off to economy for takeoff. Nik had an idea to write a little thank you note to the band on the back of our boarding pass in hope to get an autograph passing it through the steward, he talks to the steward (who just happens to be a giant fan too) and the steward says that Trent is on the plane too in first class! Ten minutes later we get our boarding pass back with "Thanks! -Trent Reznor" written on it. Sweet.
We're totally buzzing at this stage. It just couldn't get any better.
We eat our crap food and watch a bit of Sin City then its time to land.
It takes us forever to leave the plane. People are so freaking slow at getting off. (Why do people get so comfortable on a 2:20 hour flight?!) We figure the band is long gone to the refuge of the Qantas lounge by the time we get off. They were on a continuing flight home to LA.
We weave through the corridors and find ourselves in the departure lounge. There are NIN walking off, Trent Reznor sitting there with his powerbook on his own. I bound up to the dude and say hi and thanx for such an awesome show and shake his hand. Luckily Nik was there and could be a little more conversational than I. (My hand was shaking and I was starting to ramble with nervousness- this guy has been my idol since age 14) Trent isn't too smiley or welcoming really at first (in fact kind of scary- he's a massive guy these days) but Nik starts telling him how we travelled so far to see them and spent thousands on airfare etc. Trent cracks a smile and seems pretty stocked that people did that for him. I think that's the first time I've seen the guy smile. We thank him one last time and walk off to leave him and his powerbook alone. We're grinning from ear to ear and trembling and I'm just mumbling "Wow Wow Wow" cos I'm totally speechless. That has to be one of the best experiences in my whole life. It was probably the best week of my entire life.
Phew.
(My staff- now is a good time to ask for a raise. I'm such a happy mo)
