I love the country, although I've only been there once. German is one of the two languages I need to learn for my eventual PhD work. I'm a bit nervous; I learnt more of the language during my few days in Munich than I did in all my time spent in German class, making me think that I'm not all that good at class-room learned languages.
And my heart goes out to you about the Euro Cup finals. I was watching the game with my Cousin, and we were rooting for Germany like crazy.
I'm German/Irish/Polish myself; my Irish side comes out the strongest in personality and looks, but I've always been a bit of a Germanophile as well. So, yah, when National Soccer comes up, Germany's one of the team's I'll always root for.
I remember my trip to Munich in '03; what struck me the most is that I grew up in Wisconsin (a state which is more heavily German than any other in the country) and it amazed me how much the people of Munich looked and acted like people back home. I was always half expecting some guy to come up to me and ask me my opinion on how the Packer's were going to do the next season. It was almost surreal (My cousin had a Prof at school from Germany who confirmed this; he was in Green Bay and kept going off about how he felt like he was right back in Germany the entire time).
Great country, I really want to get back sometime.
