I haven't been blogging much lately because I have had a ton on my mind. After the car accident, we got a snow storm and I ended up only being able to work 24 of the 80 hours in my last pay period. As if that wasn't punishment enough, the assholes at my office gave me a written warning for not calling in within a timely fashion. I called them at least a dozen times and left messages for three different people and sent emails to let them know the situation. No one ever called me back or had the courtesy to ask if I was okay once I did return to work. Plus, on the written warning, there was a reference to two different verbal warnings I had received. (One of these was in October for alledgedly telling a new employee I disliked the weasel/cs manager. The second was for handing out Passion Parties paraphinalia during work hours. This is bunk on both parts. I did give some of my cool personalized pencils to a few coworkes outside of office hours and one of them left it on her desk. It was found and I got a shit storm raining down on me for it. All it fucking said was "MK Passion Party" and my cell number.) UGH!!!!!
So, I made it in every day this week and worked my tail off. They expect me to make at least 4 appointments a day...that's my quota. So this week, I averaged 9 appointments a day. I decided to do a little leg work on my own and determine just how badly they were ripping me off. After a little digging, I have found that in the just shy of six months I have been in the sales department I have accumulated 489 sales for the company. This amounts to $48,900 is sign up fees alone that went to the office. That's not counting the additional revenue that comes in from the actual magazine these customers then order after the sign up. If I were to calculate that, my head my rupture in anger.
The outside sales team makes $50 flat for each sale they make. They are independent contractors and don't get a base rate, just the $50 per sale. I get a base rate and a very small commission based on my sales. The owners of the company swore it would pan out to the same rate the outside sales team makes within six months. Well, it's been six months and I did the math. When I factored in my base with my commissions and divided that by the total sales I have brought in, I make $36 per sale. That's right, folks...I make $14 less per sale than the male sales reps.
Now, you might think the outside sales team deserves more because it may be more difficult for them to do their job and there is no promise they will get paid whether they sell or not. But, we have two other MEN who work in the office with me who make the same as the outside sales team. And one of them is only 20 years old and they gave him his own private office to work from. The other man in my team has his own office, too. Plus he gets an extra bonus for having the title "Inside Sales Manager".
You might also say "EmKay, he's the manager, of course he should make more." And I might be inclined to agree with you except for one thing. HE DOESN'T DO ANYTHING REMOTELY MANAGERIAL! He sits in his nice, private office and sets appointments, just like me. The only difference being his 2 appointments for every 10 I make. He only sets first appointments and nothing else. I set first and second appointments and do incoming sales and billing and media kits and whenever the customer care team is back-logged, I help them out.
But, to the Boy's Club that is my company, I am just an over-emotional woman who complains too much and should be happy to get paid anything at all, as they are so kind to even allow a woman in the same vicinity as their precious company. I've been told I would be immediately fired if they ever heard me call it a boy's club again. The company has 150 total employees in the field and in the office. There are a total of 5 woman. Two are customer service reps who make barely above minimum wage. One is an office assistant and one is the editor of the magazine. I use the term editor gernerously, because she sits in a cubicle with tiles falling from the ceiling and has a smaller desk than everyone in the office. And then there's me. I make 72 cents on the dollar compared to the others in my same position...even though I have seniority over all but one of them.
Oh No...It's definitely not a Boy's Club. No sir. Now how, no way.
And I won't even go into the two company events they have held in the past year, one of which was a tailgating party at a baseball game and one was the x-mas party at a bowling alley.
