Listening to the sweet words of Gordon Downie...whom if you've ever seen perform live appears to be the purely angryest man in existence...but he sure does sing sweetly
"Chancellor"
Seconds from pajamas I must first open all the doors
and the windows
and invite the vampire in to be one of us
Then, in the guise of cool air, in the softer hours,
he's there, sitting, talking
in the voice of your mother
about leaving one good party for another
and the night of a thousand missteps
and the loss that made him goddged
or it could've been the doggedness
that caused the loss in the first place, I guess.
Crazy daisies and wooden stars,
the threat of oxygen on Mars,
marching armies in the night,
smiling strangers riding by on bikes.
Children smoking, sloganeers on mics,
just a few things most vampires don't like.
Before the dawning's first light
I must first close up all the doors and the windows
and try to trap that cool air to be one with us.
I'm discovering uses for you I thought I'd never find.
I could've made chancellor without you on my mind.
Upon typing my rendition of this beautiful song, I began to flip through my "Coke Machine Glow" book of his that I bought at one of his shows and I just found this little ditty which I believe is just a poem and not a song.
"The Vegas Strip"
Black dogs sense a foundling
and start surrounding
smacking their lips
but you lit up
their darkest deep bonhomie
like the Vegas Strip.
Black thoughts drug dominions
and choke opinion
in diaphanous grip
but you lit up
the narcotic routes
of noctural brutes
like the Vegas Strip.
Listening to Gordon Downie always brings me back to long discussions with my friend Hans about his genius (both Gordon's or his own). Cold evenings me drinking coffee and him starting out with coffee and then switching to beer, the smell of cigarette smoke, and winter air seeping in through the cracks between the window and the seal...stealing our warmth like a jelous child.
I am feeling quite pleasant. I had a nice day at work and it is raining. It feels more like home when it rains. Its more the sky than the weather that makes it feel that way. I can feel myself winding down from a weird and stressful week to my nice three day week-end... which I am looking forwad to quite a bit.
hummmmmmmm
