It has come to my attention that deaf people around the country are being improperly exposed to newsflashes.
When I went to the gym tonight, I was watching a closed-captioned episode of CSI and the 11:00 newsflash came on during one of the commercial breaks. While the news itself is generally closed-captioned, apparently their little flashes aren't, and they can be very misleading.
For example...the newsflash tonight showed some guy spreading peanut butter on a slice of bread. That's it. No visual explanation given whatsoever.
So what the fuck am I supposed to think as I watch this? What is it about this guy spreading peanut butter on a slice of bread that's so newsworthy? Are there deadly toxins in peanut butter that I don't know about? Are terrorists planting bombs in certain brands of peanut butter? Have scientists discovered that the act of spreading peanut butter on a slice of bread increases your life span? Do peanuts have mutative properties that will give us all super powers? I will never know, because I missed the 11:00 news tonight.
Now I will never know the answer, and neither will any deaf people who were watching CBS and missed the news.

I actually have a deaf child in my class, and it has really been a challenge. A welcome challenge, though, I have to really focus on my facial expressions and such.
