The only consistent issue consumer reports mentioned about the front loaders is the build up of mold/fungus in the rubber seal around the door (which is a problem my mom had with her Maytag). The CR recommendation was to leave the door open when not in use. But there have been suggestions of running an empty load with a bleach mixture after doing laundry.
I've tried the clear nail polish on a couple of keys on my keyboard and it works fine. With as many keys as there are, it's like doing 10 pairs of large fingernailed hands. It's going to be a slow project for me because the smell gets strong quickly. I tried outlining the L key on mine with a fine point sharpie, but it dissolved immediately in the nail polish. I might try some other kind of paint sometime.
