I live in the USA. I didn't know these were a thing until I moved from the mid-west (Ohio) to the west coast (Washington) and someone had one at an office I worked in or something. I don't recall how I learned about it, but I've used an electric kettle for boiling a lot of my water ever since. Especially when I was single and made single serving food a lot. Getting water hot in the kettle and then putting it in a jar and putting noodles in it was a great, fast, and no-mess way to make spaghetti that I did quite often.
