I spent a few hours of my Saturday and Sunday this last weekend cursing at my computer as I struggled to get a Minecraft Severing running on an oldish Toshiba Laptop that I installed Linux on. My son likes to play with his friends, and loves to install his own mods and such, and hosting a server at home is inexpensive and pretty easy and gives us a lot of control compared to cloud hosting options and such, plus it's putting an old computer that would otherwise be going unused to use.
Anyway, fast forward to today, and he called me from his moms house and asked; "Dad, how do I edit the server.properties file on the Minecraft server." I walked him through how to do it over the phone. He's learning *nix just because he wants to manage his own Minecraft server and I love it! Tonight we went over how to login with ssh, navigate a directory structure, using sudo to do things that require super user permissions, editing files with vi, changing file ownership, and how to start, stop, and check the status of systemd processes!
