The zine went out last night (except for a few straggler isssues that went out this morning) There are still copies if anyone is interested...
The next issue comes out in Feb and I am happy for the Yule break. I really worked myself over on this issue just because it was the re-establishment issue. I had to set things with the publisher, hire 2 new writers, undo about 20 mistakes, fix layout, fire an artist, and learn the material for 2 articles...... and with all this work, it's still a 16 page brain fart.... and that's just because it's a new begining.
We are also working on issue themes you know. The deal with the publisher is this..... they will fund us indefinitely so long as we can demonstrate that we can do it well. In testing us, the first 6 issues have triad guidelines and themes. What this means is that each issue has a 3 point measure, 3 themes that we have to mesh together in creating the issue.
This issue was:
Provokative Human Interest
.
. .
. .
. .
. .
Vengence vs.Forgiveness.

Labor for Progress.........
I mean, fucking come on Guys.... a first issue, a new start... and this is the triad requirements.
I was annoyed at first knowing that I could do this, but not yet familiar with my staff.... I smiled in a truly bitchy way, stood up and with a grace that really erked the Pubisher's contact I said "fine, consider it done" and I left.
And then as I walked out she said..."oh and one more thing... for this issue you will also use nothing more advance computer wise than microsoft publisher and hand pasting. And the issue should have a very jagged edge look to it, you know for the younger croud to enjoy. But you should watch the topics, dont want to rule out a somewhat more mature audience now do you."
I think it was here that i almost lunged over and strangled her. I happen to love Photoshop, Fireworks, and all of the MM line. I had never even used publisher before having snubbed it as being basic and unreasonable.... which it was.
Yet... the issue is done. Vengence vs. Forgiveness has been addressed in 4 places. Provokative human Interest in several places ranging from sick world news, retro sex pics, SG!!!!!, a confessional, and information on alternative religion. Labor for Progress is something we used as a reason to launch a political section we had been thinking about. After all, becoming more involved is a labor for progress. We even got a little vain and have added an easy interior decor page.
And believe me, it looks like an MS piece, and will be the ONLY issue done this way.
I am pleased that it's done... albeit a 16 page brainfart.... but it's a good first effort considering the height of the bars.
Other than that Christmas shopping for my son (by the By everyone... his name is Noah, he's 6 and grand) is fun so far. I am keeping track of which "Bionicles" I am buying by keping track of the color of the lids on them.... (I dont think i liked such confusing things as a kid). I have replaced playdo with non mush air dry crayola clay, he has a full set of sport balls (as I will not impose my prejudice against jock-ism on him) and a numbr of other very cool boy things.
My personal life is interesting enough...
but not ready for presentation here yet.
Thanks to all of you that read and post. I really do enjoy all of you which is why I am sticking around.
Again, any that would like an issue of "Violently Random", please just send me an address.
HUGS, KISSES
