yeah so I'M unemployed!! Goodbye scuzzy hotel!! woo hoo!! and i get my loan refund check deposited into my checking account in three days, so i'm not all that worried about cash right now. though i will be looking for another job starting today anyway.
see, what happened with the hotel is, about 3 days ago, i realized the drawer was short $27 at the end of my shift. it was fine at the beginning, so i realized it occurred on my shift somehow. i didn't steal it, so the only explanation to this day is i must have given someone back WAY too much change. i don't know how that happened either, but it's the only explanation i can come up with.
well my boss, a 40-something indian guy, old-fashioned and set in his ways, (as well as rather unfair, considering there is no hope for anyone who works for him to receive a raise at any time...i've worked there over a year now at $6.50 an hour, barely making rent) told me he was going to take that $27 out of my next check. now, i talked to a law student friend of mine the other day, and he informed me that it is not my legal obligation to pay off this money, considering i did not take it. sure it happened on my shift and i take full responsibility for my mistake, but i am not legally obligated to pay it off. it's a good thing he told me this too, otherwise i would have just agreed and been fucked over. i explained all this to don (my boss), and he got EXTREMELY upset with me. Over and over with (insert Apu accent) "you think you can be smart with me? no, you bring up attorneys, you bring up legal action like you're going to sue me. i don't want all that. you try to threaten me! no no no...i hate it so much when people bring up law! don't bring up attorneys with me! you can leave today!" hahaha.....yeah. so obviously don-boy's hiding something. he's rather frightened of the law. so it came down to him giving me a rather illegal ultimatum: Pay off the $27 or you're fired. we yelled at each other for a half an hour. i ended up crying after a while when i told him about the scattered (but obvious) sexual advances another old, gross male employee had been making to me, and if he didn't fire HIM sometime soon, i was definitely going to bring the police into it. (btw i wasn't lying about all that stuff just to make a cheap jab...it all happened, unfortunately).
*sigh* so ANYWAY....don's scared to death of me bringing legal action against him. he promised to give a wonderful recommendation (he better, i was always a good employee for him, probably one of his best), and said how much he always liked me and "no hard feelings, you know..." it's like i have some sort of power now over him and he knows it and hates it. he's quite misogynistic too, i might add.
so any other law students/lawyers around here who can back me up on this? AM i legally responsible for this money? can i take him to court for firing me because i did not pay said money? i'm just curious....it's not like i can afford a lawyer anyway. and i planned to quit a lot sooner, so i didn't lose much. it just really irks me that this guy thinks he can push people around like that. and of course, if nothing is done about the sexual harrassment (i.e., old guy doesn't get fired) then i WILL do something about that.
