Hey. I've messed with photography for about 10 years. Nothing serious at all. I mostly just took reference shots for my paintings and didn't care much about the quality. I was at one time showing in 6 galleries in my region but was very unhappy because I was known for painting landscapes and no one was interested in my figure work. So I just...quit.

I took up photography again about a year ago. I've taken tens of thousands of pictures since then and got some decent lights and stands and other equipment and leased a studio so I can spend time practicing and experimenting as well as serious shooting. I've also taken classes from working pros on some of the more technical aspects of photography and lighting and I've assisted for over a dozen photographers since this time last year.

I also use my art background for color theory, composition and I give myself some brutal self critiques. All of that and I tend to be a little hyper creative at times.

As for being paid, I've been turning down money to shoot for about 6 or 8 months. I either shoot for my own enjoyment and interest in a project or a decline the offer. At this point I am much more interested in learning and getting experience than I am with making money. I am also careful not to undercut photographers trying to make a living. If someone wants to pay me for a job that I know would be taking money out of another pocket I either recommend them to one of my friends in the business or I bid really high. Honestly, I'm just not interested in the work being offered anyway i.e; senior portraits, weddings, product shots, headshots, blah blah blah. Of course those things are not so easy to avoid as one might think.

As I see it, I did my time as a guy who painted pretty pictures for money. Now I'm in this game on my terms so I might be the wrong person to ask advice. Good luck and I hope I answered your questions. smile

Did I say day 375 of my unemployment? Whoops! It's day 455. 456, now. I can't do math! No wonder I'm unemployed.

Monster.com doesn't have a single job in LA, San Diego, Portland, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale that's .NET or C++ for today. A typical Monday, though. Tuesday should be better.

I guess I'll spend the rest of the day downloading music by the Mamas...

Okay, it's my first journal entry, and I'm going to make it meaningful, damnit!

I've sorta been obsessed with the differences in cities, lately. I've lived in only three. Portland, OR, Philadelphia, and San Juan, PR. I have an irrational hatred of Philadelphia that probably has more to do with living with three guys in a two bedroom apartment in West Phili than the city,...
